It’s been a long six years, but Ish Monroe has finally got another piece of Elite Series hardware to add to his collection after winning the 2012 Power-Pole Slam on Lake Okeechobee. After the worst tournament of his career last week, Monroe delivered on the final day weighing in at 30 pounds, 15 ounces, and winning the event by over 12 pounds. He joins the Bassmaster Century Club for the second time in his career with his 108 pounds, 5 ounces total for the event. Ish was using a 1 oz. Black and Blue Jig with a Missile Baits D Bomb trailer and a River 2 Sea Trash Bomb around Pelican Bay looking for circles and clear points around the reeds.
The California pro lead all four days of competition, but it wasn’t a done deal like everyone thought it would be going into today. Even though he grew his lead over the first two days, Monroe saw his 13 pound lead shrink to just 15 ounces going into Sunday. The man that was right on his tail was no other than the hottest angler on tour right now, Classic champion Chris Lane.
Lane was really the only angler that had a real shot at taking the title away from Monroe. The 2012 Southern Open #1 and Classic Champion was continuing to catch bigger fish as the tournament went on weighing in 21-15, 23-10, and the second biggest of limit of the tournament 31-3 yesterday. He had his worst day of the tournament though today weighing in with 18 pounds, 13 ounces. Lane did have a 10 pound lead over Skeet Reese who was sitting in second at the moment, but Ish Monroe still had yet to weigh-in. Once Ish pulled up to the stage everyone knew it was over as his pulled out big bass one after the other.
Skeet Reese finished 3rd (84-12) using a Lucky Craft LV 100, and a Berkley Havoc Sick Fish Swim bait. After missing the Classic last year, Reese now has the early lead in the Toyota Tundra Bassmaster Angler of the Year race. Here’s a look at the top 10 finishers:
- Ishama Monroe 108-5
- Chris Lane 95-9
- Skeet Reese 84-12
- Shaw E Grigsby 79-2
- Brent Chapman 77-8
- Jeff Kriet 75-12
- Scott Rook 75-5
- Kevin VanDam 72-6
- Tommy Biffle 71-0
- Terry Scroggins 69-10
